"You've been gone a lot," I tell Emma when she walks in. It's the morning of the fourth of July, and it's been two days since I fought with Ezra. I haven't seen him since. It's been two days since Emma left the broom at the door, and I haven't seen her since, either.

"I was with a friend," she says. "I'm surprised you noticed. You haven't spent many nights here lately, either."

"A boyfriend?" I ask.

"A male friend," she smiles.

"Did you know…" I start. "Well, of course, you must have, but…"

"But what?"

"My mom and Ezra's dad were engaged," I say.

"What are you doing today?" she asks, not answering the question.

"I don't know. Maybe nothing."

There was a party at Ezra and Liam's house. I wasn't sure if I still wanted to go. As if on cue, my phone vibrates in my hand.
